Buying a decent card from a shop can be more expensive than you would expect. I have often paid as much as £4 because all the cards less than that had rubbish designs. Now, I just make my own. Here are two examples of cards I have made- I didn't buy anything to make them, I just made them out of stuff in my stationary drawer.

For this first card, I used a file separator page as the background. You could also use card (and you probably should if you have some) but I used this as it was all I had available to me. I drew a funky pattern on the front using only a felt tip liner.

Next, on a separate piece of plain paper, I put my graphics design skills to the test. Using line guides I wrote GOOD LUCK in my best attempt at bubble writing. I coloured it in using a highlighter pen. I chose to colour it in blue because blue is the complementary colour of yellow.

And then I simply just stuck them together with glue! Viola!

A simple card that you can make in minutes and it still looks good!

For this next card, I tried to make it a bit more complex. I started with more file separator pages! This time I decided to add pop up elements so I set about cutting up bits of card from different coloured separators. in order to make the elements that I wanted to pop up. I then cut the card so that I had appropriate stands to stick my pop ups on. I then stuck them on with double sided tape- this was actually body tape (when I told you I literally used everything available to me...)!

I then got anther piece of green card which to be the outer layer and started to outline the shape that I wanted to cut it to. I decided I would cut it into the shape of a four-leaf clover for luck. After sketching it, I cut it. I then traced that shape onto the inside card and out that out too. I made sure I still had space for my pop up features and that I was not cutting them.

I then decided to paint the front of the card. The problem was, however, that I had no paint. So I got a plastic lid of a container and coloured it in with highlighter. I then added drops of water that mixed with the highlighter to become a watery kind of paint. I used this and a makeup brush as a sponge to shade in the four-leaf clover.

It doesn't look to good here as it was still wet, but when it dried, the effect was a lot better. After it had dried, I then outlined the words with a liner pen. I then stuck the two pieces of the card together using body tape.

After a few more adjustments such as perfecting the writing and a bit more shading of the four leaf clover- I was done!
